This tray is red lacquer with raised black lacquer design on wood.  The edge surround is a key pattern and the interior is vines or branches with leaves and flowers.  Other images in raised black lacquer are birds and small animals.
Most lacquerware is made by applying numerous layers of lacquer on wooden surfaces. That is precisely what makes lacquerware different from other wooden ware; that gentleness and softness you feel each time you touch its surface comes from the all-natural material it was made of.
