Absolutely beautiful, hand made, vintage Burmese Kalaga. The textile tapestry of the revered elephant, is intricately hand beaded, with glass and brass beads, as well as sequin embellishments. The amazingly unique thing about this piece is the historical record on the back of the frame. The piece was purchased in Burma on Sept 18, 1988, and was professionally framed on October 31, 1988. 1970's Burmese hand made and beaded Kalaga textile tapestry of a revered elephant. Matted & framed, measuring 14” x 13.5.”
Kalaga is the traditional name for embroidered tapestries done entirely by hand from Myanmar (Burma). The ancient kalagas were made for royal palaces. These tapestries depict scenes from the ancient epic Hindu poem, the Ramayana, or Buddhist mythology.
