Description
An excellent 19th century Sacred Temple Statue of a Burmese Standing Buddha, considered to be one of the early representations of the Buddha from the Mandalay Period. Hand-carved from Teakwood, the figure is depicted standing with feet firmly planted on a small round lotus plinth, in the Gesture of Meditation, performed with both hands outstretched at both sides in mudra, while holding the medicinal'Myrobalan' fruit in the right hand. Buddha is clothed in an elegantly carved 'Uttarasanga' robe worn in the 'Closed' mode covering both shoulders, and draped with a long undulating end flap folded decoratively to the mid-section. The 'Antaravasaka' covers the body from the waist to the knees. As with traditional Manadaly Period Buddha figures, his garment is featureless at the back.Uttarasanga is also known as
the prominent robe
and is mostly used to wrap the entire left shoulder and leave the right shoulder, as well as an arm open. Uttarasanga mostly cover the Antaravasaka and is covered by Sanghati.
The figure is well proportioned and intricately carved with detailed features. Please note a small crack in the wood inbetween the feet as shown in the last photo.
