  • Condition: Quite a large pair of 19th Century British Colonial Mandalay statues of the Buddha’s two chief disciples, Sariputta and Moggallana. Made from carved,lacquered and gilded wood with stones and foiled back mirrors inlayed in the cloaks and on the trimmings, these Buddhist Statues Measure 28cm tall or 11 x 11 x 7 1/2 inches. Sariputta sits in a position of listening with one hand resting on a shin and the other on his thigh. Moggallana sits with his hands pressed together in adulation. The robes of each are highlighted with bands of moulded lacquer work, known as thayo work. Carved wooden and lacquered images of these 2 Buddhist saints were used in temples and monasteries where they were placed before images of the Buddha as part of a shrine (hpaya khan).
