Description
Hailing from the French port of Concarneau, theMarie Jeanne
was a part of anactive tuna fishing fleet from 1900 to 1950. Tuna fishing was considered a verystrenuous occupation requiring very strong, fast, and seaworthy boats. The
Marie Jeanne
is an example of aDundee of about 50 or 60 tons rigged with many sails and carrying a 12 mencrew.
The tuna fishing boats are equipped withtangons (long poles), which are more than 20m long. They are placed oneach side of the main mast, and are lowered down on each side when the boat isfishing. Normally, every tangon has 7 lines that are connected to eachother by ropes. This enables the fishermen to drag the tuna aboardwithout touching the position of the tangons. Two other lines are fixedto the stern and often a third - a very long one - is fixed to the top of themain mast. The lines end in a so-called "avancon" made of brasswire, where the fishing hook is fixed.
