Burmese Handmade Kalaga Large Wall Tapestry Sequin Glass Beads 29" x 35". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
Kalaga is the name for embroidered tapestries from Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) which are typically made from Black Velvet fabric or Silk Fabric embroidered with metallic or plain threads and hand adorned with various materials such as metal sequins, beads and frosted glass beads. This tradition is from centuries ago, developed in designs found originally in palaces and in pagodas in the Mandalay royal courts. The cloth is stretched over a frame and figures or patterns are decorated and sewn by hand, sometimes raised and stuffed with cotton-like material to provide a 3-D effect.
This Kalaga is a unique Vintage Burmese piece from the 1980s. This meticulously handmade wall hanging tapestry features a colorful Royal figure and dancer. Very elaborate tapestry with extensive detail in multiple materials and colors including rich silk fabrics, multi-color beads, sequins and metallic threads in gold, red, pink, green, yellow, blue, white. The needlework and heavy embroidery are gorgeous, the piece has been well kept over the years. Some of the hand sewn sequins may have fallen off and you will see slight wear on the edges of the tapestry which is common for vintage items but the craftsmanship is of highest quality. The back is made of black silk and the front background is made out of a black cloth velvety material.
