It is written in the Pali language using Burmese script. The square letters were written in thick and black cinnabar lacquer. Each leaf is on both sides with illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology. The small hole is for the string that binds them together, or
so they could be placed over a bamboo skewer when being read
    .
Kammavaca is the most sacred of Burmese religious texts, was used for monastic ritual, most commonly for ordination. It contains rules of monastic service and includes scripts (khandaka) on ordination, admonitions to the newly ordained monk.
