Antique Burmese "Silver Bronze" Aquatic Hintha Bird Opium Weight 1,021g. 18th C.
    Overview:
A relatively rare 18th century Burmese Opium Weight, exquisitely crafted and produced by artist from the Shan States region of Myanmar, depicting the mythical 'Hintha' Bird, also known as Hamsa, an aquatic bird which inhabited the Himalaya Forest of southern Burma, and was considered by Burmese to be a sacred animal symbolic of purity, divine knowledge and cosmic breath.
This particular style of weight was lost wax cast in what is known as "Silver Bronze", containing very little actual silver alloy, but owes its colour to metals such as tin, lead, arsenic, and antimony. However despite the silver colour, the weights are still mainly about two-thirds copper. They were mostly produced during the 18th century, and are easily identifyable by not only their brilliant colour, but also by the high degree of decorative tooling and metal working skills, achieved by only the most accomplished artisans of the Imperial courts, during the Konbaung Dynasty. The age of the piece is appearent by its smooth worn away surface, where lines and grooves have shallowed from extensive handling ovr time.
    Description:
The Hintha Bird is boldly modeled in the shape of a small groud pecking fowl, seated on a hexagonal base, incised with a horizontal band of small cubes, delicately detailed with closely fitted wings and tail plumage, bulging eyes, pointed beak, and crested headdress. Beautifully cast with smooth naturally aged silvery tarnished patina, and traces of green malachite encrustation at the bottom.
