Magnificent Burmese Marble Statue of a Shan Buddha, Myanmar 19th Century.
Description:
Exquisite 19th century relief carved image of a Burmese Shan Buddha, meditating on a Lotus Throne, beautifully executed with impressive authority, from a single block of dense Marble. The image has a relatively smooth finished surface, with precise details carved in the face and outlined areas of the figure. Incised lines are used to delineate the facial features, outlining of the garment and bottom hem of the robe. Chisel marks are present over the creviced areas of the figure, and the entire back surface. Wonderful naturally aged weathered patina, with gold gilding remnants.
xxxx
The sculpture is fragmented at the lower rear section and bottom portion of the stone - whether intentional by the creators hands, of a spiritual entity emerging from the stone, or a repercussion of age from whence it was broken. Assumed broken, the sculpture was previously repaired using cement, by Burmese villagers.
xxxx
The buddha is seated in the 'Vajrasana' posture, with legs crossed and both soles of the feet pointed upwards. The left hand resting palm open on the lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture, with fingers of equal length stretched forward to touch the ground.
xxxx
Buddha sits upright in perfect perpendicular alignment with the earth. His well shaped torso is inflated by a broad chest, and narrow waist, wearing a long monastic robe in the 'Open Mode", diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered. A broad end flap drapes to his midriff, indicated by incision.
xxxx
His gentle face has a refine remote appearance characterized by a somewhat oval shape, with a serene expression. Highly detailed eyes are carved in relief and accentuated by arched eyebrows set above a finely shaped aquiline nose, and well-shaped smiling lips. Beautifully carved elongated earlobes fall to his shoulders, and rings of enlightenment encompass his neck. The head is featureless with a carved ridge separating the hairline from his forehead, surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', which terminates into a bulbous gem radiance. At the base, lotus petals are uniformily incised in arcs, directed towards the middle of the base, elevating the figure with simplistic elegance, while the back of the sculpture is featureless.
