    Description

    Burmese marionette puppet "Durga” circa
    late 19th Century?.
    Exquisitely detailed and richly decorated costume with beading, roundels, metallic thread, etc.
    The marionette has multiple heads (front and back) and 10 arms and holding weapons in each hand.
    34 inches long.  No makers mark or markings. Weighs over 10 pounds.
    Strings are a bit tangled, there is fraying on the fabric in a few places, a weapon is missing from the upper right hand, and some of the sequins have fallen off over the years. (see photos).
    Durga also known as Jagadamba (Universe Mother), is a widely revered and one of the most popular deities in Hinduism. She is worshipped as a one of principal aspects of the supreme mother goddess Adi Shakti, and is associated with protection, strength, and motherhood.
    Durga traditionally holds the weapons of various male gods of Hindu mythology, which they give her to fight the evil forces because they feel that she is the shakti (energy, power). These include chakra, conch, bow, arrow, sword, javelin, trishul, shield, and a noose. These weapons are considered symbolic by Shakta Hindus, representing self-discipline, selfless service to others, self-examination, prayer, devotion, remembering her mantras, cheerfulness and meditation.
    She has been revered by warriors, blessing their new weapons.
