Antique Burmese Architectural Terracotta Glazed Ridge Tile Finial. Myanmar, Circa 19th C.
Description:
An elaborate 19th century gable ridge tile Finial, which once adorned the roof of a Buddhist Temple or Monastery of Burma. The finial depicts a supernatural being, known in Myanmar as a 'Nat Spirit', seated in meditation on a gable base, with hands pressed together in the 'Namaskara' mudra, a devotional attitude of prayer.

The figure is dressed in a regal style garment, decorated with flanges at the shoulders, and a central rosette at the front midriff. The head is tilted in a benevoent nature, covered by a traditional Burmese style conical-shaped headdress ornamented in lotus petals. The face appears youthful, with almond-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, long nose, pressed lips, and elongated earlobes.

The 'End Tile' was hand-crafted by Burmese artisans from hand-gathered Terracotta clay, beautifully decorated in a rich Celadon green glaze, with portions of the natural clay bisque exposed at the gable base, along with remnants of masonry, from when it was mortared in position.
GLAZED ROOF TILES -
The unique feature of Burmese Buddhist Monasteries and Temples is the tiered roof, called 'Pyatthat' in Burmese language. Normally the roof can be three to seven tiers high and elegantly decorated. The end of the gables turn upward and terminate in finials, fitted to decoratively emphasize the gable end, and to act as a deterrent to ward off evil forces.
Data Observation:
Excellent condition, well preserved considering a roof top element, with the tile having normal chips, dents, and minor loss of the left earlobe, garment flanges, and headdress, due to the many years of exposure to the weather and other deteriorating conditions. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
