DESCRIPTION & CONDITION
This auction is for a fantastic, unsigned antique, believed to be 1930's or earlier, Burmese Nat Spirit primitive folk art
hard teak wood
carving sculpture.  This spirit
is from pre-Buddhist animist beliefs of the Burmese people. These spirits are a group of supernatural beings, or nature spirits, of which there is a special group of 37 ‘royal’ Nats.  Nat worship is still practiced today in Burmese society, alongside Buddhism which is the prevalent religion in Burma but is much more common in rural areas.
This piece is of a man on horseback in traditional Burmese dress fashion of the period and may be Aung Zawmagyi, said to have been executed for arriving too slowly
by an angry prince who had been waiting for important news.  Several other names appear to be used for this Nat such as Nga Pyi or Khai Myinbyu Shin.  It may also be king Thibaw or king Alaungpaya on horseback. I will leave it to you to do your own research.
Condition of piece is in overall very good to excellent for its age.  Piece has a broken and missing left ear tip on the horse, a small chip on the left hand fingers (photo #9), some minor handling scuffing and small areas with
reddish
stain, which is not obvious and hardly noticeable. The first photo's color is the actual color of the item.  Photos 7 & 8 are a bit off in color. I'm unsure of exact age, so again, please do your research. L
